Intro
This question has fascinated me since I was child trying to read my Dad’s book about it. That’s 30+ years.
My best answer right now is:
Zen is a lifestyle meditation.
Zen is also my nickname
Given to me by my martial art brother Double Dragon, 15 years ago.
We were sitting in a wild hot spring in Taroko National Park, Taiwan and it was hot. And there was no room.
The only way I could stay in the water was to turn myself off.
No me, no uncomfortable feelings.
I don’t know how long I was there. But my friend said I looked ‘very zen.’
My Sifu has explained the words meaning many times over the years, but it is towards the Buddhist expression – ‘back to essence.’
Where did ‘I’ go?
I ‘found’ a place of peace I had never felt before.
It was underneath everything.
It felt like going home.
It felt pure, it felt fresh and calm.
It has fascinated me even more, every day since.
How does one ‘find’ zen?
Zen is our natural-being. But not our normal being.
This is because life forms together create a vibration to exist. Everyone fits into this vibration or they cannot survive.
In 2024, modern human lifestyle now is not zen.
What does zen have to do with energy?
Zen is when all our energy returns back to our centre. When all our 6 senses return back from searching everywhere outside, to inside.
– Go to nature, find a place where the elements are balanced – earth, water, fire, wind. If you find somewhere where time vanishes, that’s probably a good spot to practice. We might say it has good ‘Ferg shui’. Which is Chinese for Wind, water.
– Practice Tai Chi. This is the most practical skill to reach a level of meditation I have come across. But it is very difficult to learn without a Sifu in the beginning.
– Read philosophy. Daoist and Buddhist philosophy are a bridge for the mind to expand / shut down for awhile.
– Tui-na / healing massage. Release tension from gravity and in-skilled movement all day is an easy way to return
– Yoga Yi Jing Jin. By stretching and opening the ligaments and making the energy flow, this switches off the mind and the body heals itself.
Zen Masters
The Zen Masters knew, I bet, that conditioning the body so it is easier to go back every day is a deep skill itself.
For them, their goal is to remain in zen while living a full, extreme but in harmony, balanced life.
Practice:
– Find time each day to practice Zen. Practice going back to a peaceful zone, before any issues. Just one moment is an incredible gift of health. But also do not be upset if you didn’t reach it.
